Types of hard drive data loss

Logical failure

  • The hard drive is in working order but some files or data cannot be accessed for logical reasons such as a lost partition or accidental reformatting.
  • Hard drives are imaged. A copy of the disk is made and transferred to a new system. We also have tools that can "force" the drive to read around the bad area.

Mechanical failure

  • The hard drive is not functioning. Most usually caused by head crashes and motor failures.
  • Recoveries are performed in dust-free cleanroom environments where they are carefully dismounted, examined and processed.

What causes hard drive failure?

The most common reasons that we see for hard drive failure are:

  • Power surges.
  • Overwritten data.
  • Physical damage.
  • Natural disasters.
  • Viruses.

Laptop & desktop

What we do

We offer a fully comprehensive file recovery service for both laptop and desktop computers.

We have over twenty years of experience in data recovery and have built long-term relationships with all the major laptop and desktop computer manufacturers. This means that our R&D teams are always informed, up-to-date, and equipped with the latest skills, tools, and procedures.

It is because of our cutting-edge data recovery services and solutions that so many of our customers are referred to us from other data recovery companies, unable to recover the data themselves.

Desktop and laptop recovery capabilities

  • Any operating system (Windows, Linux, Mac, etc).
  • Any laptop, desktop, server or other storage device make or model.
  • Any drive: hard drive recovery.
  • All causes of data loss.

Signs that your desktop or laptop is likely to experience data loss

What to do when your desktop or laptop is failing

  • Turn off your computer immediately - further operation may damage the data beyond repair.
  • Do not restart your computer.
  • Do not install or re-install any software.
  • Do not shake, disassemble, remove or attempt to clean a hard drive you suspect is damaged.
  • Do not attempt to dry a wet computer.
  • If the data is of high-value, do not use file recovery or other utility software.
  • Never attempt to operate any visibly damaged devices.

Mobile device recovery

RAID data recovery

What we do

Although RAID recovery is one of the most technically challenging types of data recovery, we are able to provide unmatched resources - including our own proprietary technology - to make sure we can cover all the mainstream Raid levels.

We also support a lot of proprietary Raid array systems- including creating bespoke tools for proprietary and unusual Raid arrays. In addition to the usual vendor specific RAIDs, we also have extensive capabilities with MAC, UNIX, FAT and VMware Raids.

RAID recovery - capabilities

  • Any RAID level
  • Any hard drive type, make or model
  • All causes of data loss: including viruses, natural disasters, accidental deletion, system crashes, corruption, hardware failure and more

RAID recovery - service options

Remote services

If the problem with your raid is logical then there is no reason why we cannot perform the recovery remotely.

This could cover data loss situations like a simple file deletion, lost partitions, formats and even complete loss of RAID configuration. All these can be done with the drives never even leaving your premises. This is by far the fastest option to getting your data back, without the need or cost of shipping the drives to us.

In-lab data services

Our in-house lab and cleanroom facilities ensure we have the most extensive data recovery capabilities possible.

All the logical failures that can be worked on remotely can also be completed at our lab. The drives you send to our lab will be returned in exactly the same state as you sent them - your recovered data will be sent back to you on either External USB or FireWire drive.

On-site data services

In cases where moving your storage media would require too much downtime, or if your business security is very stringent, bringing our team of data recovery experts on to your facility may be the best option.

Our security cleared engineers can visit your site to perform the recovery or, if a large number or drives are involved, we can obtain a drive image and work on it back at our lab, thereby minimising your users downtime.

Development for proprietary systems

Our worldwide team of developers are always prepared to create bespoke software and tools to handle any proprietary system.

Databases, RAIDs and even old, or generally unsupported file systems, can be looked into.

Server recovery

What we do

Our engineers recover lost data from:

  • File servers.
  • Application servers.
  • Web servers.
  • Direct-attached RAID.
  • Network attached storage.
  • Very large storage area network (SAN) systems.

Server data recovery is available for virtually any type of storage system, configuration, and situation:

  • Any server make, model or brand.
  • All types of RAID configurations.
  • Any operating systems (Windows, Linux, UNIX, etc.).
  • All causes of data loss: including data loss resulting from natural disasters, power loss or surge, logical or mechanical failures, and viruses.
  • Development for proprietary systems: our worldwide team of developers are always prepared to create bespoke software and tools to handle any proprietary system.

Solid state media recovery

What we do

Between Sept 2007 and Sept 2008, Kroll Ontrack Data Recovery specialists saw a 70% increase in data recovery requests for flash media and solid-state drives (SSD).

We have therefore developed our capabilities and processes to include the recovery of data from flash media and both IDE and SATA solid-state drives.

The two most common causes of data loss in flash media and solid-state drives are:

  • Accidental physical damage
  • Power interruption to the device causing electronics failure and/or data corruption.Solid state disc

"Flash memory is a key technology enabling new designs for many products in the business and consumer markets. However, the new developments and enhancements to the technology - larger storage capacity, diverse applications and performance - don't exempt flash and SSD media from data loss.

As products with flash and SSD continue to become more prevalent, the more critical the data they store becomes. They may eventually even replace hard disk drives. Consequently, it is vital that users of this storage technology have options for recovery

VMware recovery

What we do

Data recovery for VMware® and Virtual Machines

By utilising the industry's largest team of data recovery engineers and an unmatched suite of custom data recovery tools, your VMware data loss situation can be evaluated, and recovery initiated, in a matter of hours via our in-lab, on-site or remote data recovery services.

Not only are we one of the only companies to offer ESX server recovery, we can also recover data from the following VMware systems:

  • VMware Infrastructure 2 & 3 (ESX Server, VMFS)
  • VMware Server
  • VMware Workstation (all versions)

The most common causes of VMware data loss are:

  • Drive, RAID or iSCSI failure
  • Deleted or corrupted virtual disks
  • Accidentally reformatted RAID array
  • Failed software SAN
  • Reformatted or re-installed VMFS volumes
  • VMFS file system corruption on ESX server
